AS Unit F910: Promoting quality care
Unit 1 will look at the social, psychological and physiological issues that can impact on life, using examples in everyday society. This in turn will discuss the standards of care that need to be provided and maintained, adapting care to be client based which includes the ethical and practical issues surrounding care. This will be compared with negative care practices and the implications of poor service on clients and service providers.

Each unit will provide examples of client groups and specify appropriate services; inter-linked on which client base may use which service and why. This unit will explore the advantages and disadvantages, services available and what improvements can be made. The reader will be able to identify, describe and evaluate health and social care services.

Unit 1 will provide the core skills needed for health and social care professionals. This will remain generally broad to ensure the reader gains an understanding on caring skills and techniques needed when undertaking a profession in the health and social care field such as social worker, nurses, occupational therapists, care workers.

This unit will also look at access to services, the reader will be provided with information regarding how clients can access each of the services, and whether a service can be accessed directly by a client, or whether access is mainly through a professional referral: What barriers there are to accessing services such as, inadequate resources, ignorance, physical difficulties and communication.

AS Unit F911: Communication in care setting
This unit will explore communicating in written, oral and non-verbal. This will include the alternatives to verbal communication, where the reader will gain the ability to adapt to different ways of communicating to ensure the client can express feeling and opinions and are provided with effective services that are appropriate for their needs.

Discussion and examples will be given to why there needs to be clear and effective communication with clients/professionals/colleagues. Examples will be given in regards to good and bad communication and how this can impact on the client and service provider. Candidates will also find out how effective communication values individuals and promotes health and well-being.

This unit will be assessed by internal assessment via coursework.

AS Unit F912: Promoting good health
This unit investigates the range of lifestyle choices and societal factors which influence health and well-being. Candidates will investigate the ways in which ill-health can be prevented and the health-promotion methods that are used by health-and-social-care practitioners. Candidates will develop an understanding of the attitudes and prejudices which influence individuals’ health and well-being. This unit is designed to improve the reader’s knowledge of health, illness and disease and to develop understanding of the different factors which affect health and well-being.

Candidates will produce a report of the planning of, and their participation in, a small-scale health-promotion campaign to promote good health.

The candidate will be provided with information and details on how to construct and design a questionnaire to determine different attitudes to and understanding of concepts of health and ill health. The questionnaire will also cover the principles of, reasons for, importance of and interrelationships of different factors affecting health and well-being. The student will be able to provide a clear explanation of how results of the questionnaire are collated and analysed to provide valid conclusions.

A2 Unit F919: Care practice and provision
This unit will build upon the knowledge, skills and understanding which the candidate gained from the mandatory AS units to form the synoptic assessment element for these specifications.

It is necessary for all those who work in health, social care, education and early years’ settings to understand their role in meeting individual needs and how working in partnership with other agencies can support their work. Additionally, health care practitioners should understand the importance of quality assurance and how this relates to raising the standard of care for people in need. It is also necessary for all who work in these sectors to be aware of how legislation and national policy impacts on local services.

This unit will be assessed by internal assessment via coursework.
You will be required to carry out an investigation to show how demographic factors influence the organisation and provision of health, social care and early-years services within your local area, illustrating how two different local services meet the needs of one person who uses services.

A2 UNIT F920:  Understanding human behaviour and development
This unit provides an understanding of the influences that can affect growth and development and of the concepts and theories that can be used to explain human behaviour across differing life stages.

This unit is divided into three sections.

The first unit explores some of the factors influencing human development.
The second section describes the theories and stages of human development.
The third section explores the application of theories to aid the understanding of human behaviour and Development.

A2 Unit F923 Mental Health Issues

This unit also seeks to look at how people with mental health issues are aided treated and supported by mental health specialists and practitioners.
The knowledge gained throughout this unit will help those candidates who are considering a career as a psychiatric nurse, clinical psychologist or psychiatric care practitioner or manager.

Examination Centre

brk

The contract for sitting exams is between you and the centre (OCR) and we will provide you with comprehensive instructions on when and how to deal with the examination centre.

Start Learning will provide you with a list of examination centres but it is entirely your responsibility to find a centre which will accept you as an external candidate.
In some cases you should be prepared to travel to another town or city to take your exams.

Start Learning provides expertise support and advice for students in their studies through their comprehensive course packs and tutoring system. However, we do stress that it is the student’s responsibility to find a centre to register and take their exams with. We are aware that sometimes this is difficult or even impossible to arrange.

Now we have come to an arrangement with a centrally located centre where Start Learning students will be able to take their exams. It is the English Maths Science Tuition & Educational Centre, located in Birmingham, right in the centre of England.

We realise this may still involve a good deal of travelling for some students but the long-term benefits of being able to gain A Levels far outweigh the short-term  expense and inconvenience.
