Distance Learning Support

Recommended Hours of Study

We recommended you spend approximately 180 hours of your time studying for the Advanced Certificate in Surveying and Estimating course. The pace of study is completely up to you. To give an example, if you dedicate 3 hours a week to the course it would take you a year to complete but if you could spare 6 hours a week you could complete it in six months.

Unit 1 – Health, Safety and Welfare in Construction and the Built Environment: Responsibilities under health, safety and welfare legislation - Construction Design and Management Regulations 1994 - Work at Heights Regulations 2005 - Construction Health, Safety and Welfare Regulations 1996 - Workplace hazards - Working at height - Risk assessments - General Workplace Health and Safety - Understanding your role in accident recording and reporting

Unit 2 – Measuring, Estimating and Tendering Processes in Construction and the Built Environment: Measuring, Estimating and Tendering Processes - Recording dimensions and descriptions of construction work - Basic mensuration techniques for volume, area and lengths - Standard Method of Measurement for Building Work - The purpose of estimating and techniques used to price work - The effects of quantity on the method of estimating chosen - Calculating all-in costs of materials, labour and plant - Approximating quantities and costs at varying design stages - Application of tender price indices and location factors - The purpose of tendering, the common techniques used

Unit 3 – Surveying in Construction and Civil Engineering: Surveying in Construction and Civil Engineering - Understand surveying terminology and produce drawings - Using equipment and instruments - Measuring and recording angles, and producing results from calculations - Performing the setting out of small buildings

Qualification

Level 3 Advanced Certificate in Surveying and Estimating.  Edexcel registration fees are not included in the cost of the course and you send your registration fee in within 28 days of enrolling on the course, currently £80.00.

Assessment

You will have to send in a series of assignments which your tutor will mark and return a feedback sheet to you with your results.
